Batheuchaeta heptneri

Short Description:

Batheuchaeta heptneri is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (5.00-5.10 mm in total length) more probably abyssopelagic species. Recorded in the Kurile-Kamchatka and Aleutian area.

Taxonomic description:

Female. Total length 5.00-5.10 mm. Abdomen 4.3 times shorter than cephalothorax. Rostrum very small, not bifid on apex. Posterior Th5 corners rounded. Genital segment asymmetrical, with projection bigger on the left, segment widest in its middle, as long as 2 following segments together (dorsal view). Ventral swelling of semicircle shape. Genital field symmetrical. A1 reaching Abd2. Md palp base with 3 setae. Ri Mx1 with 14-15 setae; otherwise oral parts typical of the genus. Ri P1 with row of denticles arranged along distal edge of external lobe apically. P2-P4 typical of the genus.

Male unknown.

Vertical distribution:

Mostly abyssopelagic, stenotherm and stenohaline species.

Geographical distribution:

Pacific Ocean: the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench area (Markhaseva, 1981, 1986b), Aleutian Trench area (Markhaseva, 1996).

Type locality: 44°20'N 150°53'E (Markhaseva, 1981).

Paratype, female, total length 5.1 mm, N 2/64736; 46 04' N 153 22' E, Sta. 5607, sample 41, 19 July 1966, depth 6100 m, stratum of sampling 0-5000 m, ring-trawl. Types are kept in the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg.
