Short Description:

Batheuchaeta pubescens is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (total length 4.10 mm). Species was found in total haul from the antarctic part of the Indian Ocean.

Taxonomic Description:

Female. Total length 4.10 mm. Cephalothorax 4.3 times longer than abdomen. Rostrum absent. Posterior Th5 corners prolonged into small rounded lobes of various configuration on the right and on the left (lateral view). Posterior Th5 corners covered with hairs and very minute spinules (left lateral view). Lateral surfaces of anterior part of genital segment with groups of knobs (dorsal view). Genital segment and genital field symmetrical. "Spectacle"-like structure of genital field big, well visible. Ventral swelling (lateral view) occupies middle of genital segment, being protruded as nose. A1 24-segmented, nearly the same length as body. Ri1 A2 with 15 setae. Oral parts typical of the genus, spinules on external lobe of Ri P1 arranged in row parallel to distal edge of lobe apically. Near external spines at Re1 and Re2 P2 there are rows of minute spinules. Ri P3 3-segmented, Re and Ri P1 broken.

Male unknown.

Vertical distribution:

The species was found in total tow from 3700 m (Markhaseva, 1986b).

Geographical distribution:

The antarctic part of the Indian Ocean (Markhaseva, 1996).

Type locality: 62°54'S 118°48'E (Markhaseva, 1986b).
