Short Description:

Chiridiella smoki is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (3.80 mm in length) from the north-western part of the Pacific Ocean of abyssopelagic.

Taxonomic Description:

Female. Total length 3.80 mm. Cephalothorax 3.8 times longer than abdomen. Anterior part of skeleton structures of genital field wavy (lateral and ventral view). A1 24-segmented, not longer than cephalothorax. Ri2 A2 with 6 setae on external and 5 long and 3 short setae on internal lobe, on coxopodite of A2 1 seta. Ri2 Md with 7 setae. Mx2 with 4 endites: first (proximal) with 1 seta, second without seta. Mx1 gnathobase with 9 setae, second internal lobe absent, third with 3, Ri with 3, Re with 8 setae, external lobe reduced. In distal group of Mxp protopodite there are 2 setae and small nipple, Ri Mxp with 3 medial setae. Ri P2 one-segmented, Ri P3-P4 2-segmented (with complete separation between Ri2 and Ri3), coxopodite of P4 without hairs.

Male unknown.

Remarks. The species is close to Ch. pacifica , but differs in: larger size, longer abdomen, higher number of setae on Ri2 Md, different number of setae on Ri Mx1, presence of 4 lobes of Mx2, presence of nipple of the distal border of Mxp protopodite.

Pacific Ocean: the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench area (Markhaseva, 1983a).

Type locality: 45°20'N 153 °54'E.

Holotype: female, N 1/64823; Kurile-Kamchatka Trench, 45°20'N 153°54'E; 19-20 August 1966; R/V "Vitjaz", 39th cruise; stratum of sampling 4600-0 m.
