Markhaseva, 1986c

Short Description:

Pseudeuchaeta spinata is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (6.5 mm in length) from abyssal of the north-western part of the Pacific Ocean.

Taxonomic Description:

Female. Total length 6.5 mm. Cephalothorax 3.1 times longer than abdomen. Rostrum like small rounded plate. Th5 posterior corners slightly divergent (dorsal view) and pointed (dorsal and lateral view). A1 exceeding cephalothorax in length. A2 rami of about equal length; coxo- and basipodite with 1 seta. Ri1 A2 lacking setae, Ri2 A2 with 12 setae (6+6); Re1 and Re2 A2 with 2 setae each. Md palp base with 1 seta, Ri1 Md more than half shorter than Re, Ri2 Md with 3-4 setae. Mx2 gnathobase with 11 setae, second internal lobe with 4, third with 3 setae, protopodite near the Ri base with 5 setae, Ri with 15-16, Re with 11 setae, external lobe with 9 setae. Mx2 typical of the genus with 6 strong, strongly sclerotized setae in distal part of endopod. Mxp strong, with setation typical of the genus; setae on Ri2-Ri5 robust, strongly sclerotized, with typical of the genus crescent-like appendages. Mxp protopodite near the base of distal setae group with very long digital appendage, longer than setae. P1 with external spines on all Re segments. Spine on Re1 P1 short, less than one third of segment length. Segmentation and setation of P2-P4 typical of the genus, number of teeth on terminal spine of P2 is more than 60, on P4 more than 50.

Remarks. The species is distinguished from other species of genus in the presence of spine on Re1 P1. Digital appendage on Mxp protopodite in P. spinata is significantly longer than in other species of genus. A1 slightly longer than cephalothorax whereas in other species they are shorter or equal to cephalothorax.
