Bradyetes matthei

Short description:

Bradyetes matthei is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after both sexes (female 1.19-1.32 mm and male 0.90-0.92 mm in total length). Species recorded off the Norwegian coast. Most probably epibenthic species.

Taxonomic description:

Female. Total length 1.19-1.32 mm. Cephalon and Th1 fused (line of fusion slightly visible), Th4-Th5 unclearly separated. Th5 posterior corners pointed. Length of genital segment exceeding length of 2 following segments together, it is also less than its width. A2 basipodite with 2, Re1 A2 lacking setae. Md palp base and Ri1 Md with 2 setae each, Ri2 Md with 9 setae. Mx1 gnathobase with 9 terminal spines and 4 setae on surface; second internal lobe with 5, third with 4 setae, at protopodite near the base of Ri - 15 setae, at Re - 10, external lobe with 9 setae. Mxp digital appendage near the distal setae group is small. Setation and segmentation of P1-P4 typical of the genus. There are groups of small spinules at P1-P4 exopodites near external border of joint and surface spinules on Ri2 P2, Ri2-Ri3 P3 and Ri1-Ri3 P4.

Male. Total length 0.90-0.92 mm. Cephalothorax 4 times longer than abdomen. Left A1 24-jointed and right A1 23-jointed. Oral parts in comparison with that in female less developed. P5 with 2-jointed left Ri P5.

Vertical distribution:

The species was found from depths 548-552 and 570-580 m (Johannessen, 1976).

Geographical distribution:

Fensfjord (Johannessen, 1976).

Type locality: 60°46'N 05°10'E (Johannessen, 1976).

Material examined:

3 females and 1 male - paratypes, kept in Zoological Museum of Bergen (Norway) under the number N 57596 were studied. In the collection of Zoological Institute, St. Petersburg the species is absent.
