Short description:

Bradyidius saanichi is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after both sexes (female 2.33-2.56 mm and 2.01-2.24 male). Species recorded from British Columbia.

Taxonomic description:

Female. (Described after Park (1966) with modifications). Total length 2.33-2.56 mm. Cephalothorax 3.4 times longer than abdomen. Rostrum with rather divergent rami, forming an obtuse angle in their base. Points of Th5 posterior corners slightly not reaching posterior border of genital segment, directed obliquely upwards to the back of specimen (lateral view), not divergent (dorsal view). A1 slightly shorter than cephalothorax. Re1 A2 lacking setae, Re2 A2 with 2, Ri2 Md with 9 terminal setae. Mx1 gnathobase with 4 posterior setae, Ri with 17 setae. All other oral parts typical of the genus. External spine at Re1 P1 nearly reaching the base of Re2 P1 spine, external spine at Re2 P1 slightly longer, than that of Re1 P1 and somewhat exceeding the base of external spine at Re3 P1. External spine at Re3 P1 twice longer that of Re2 P1. Segmentation of P3-P4 typical of the genus. At P3-P4 there are badly visible minute spinules.

Male. Total length 2.01-2.24 mm. Cephalothorax 2.4 times longer than abdomen. Points of Th5 posterior corners not exceeding posterior border of Abd1. Left A1 24-segmented, right 23-segmented. Oral parts in comparison with female rudimentary. P1-P4 identical to female, only external spines at Re P1 shorter. P5 asymmetrical, biramous, Ri P5 one-segmented, styliform; right Re P5 2-segmented, left 3-segmented.

Geographical distribution:

Saanich Inlet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia (Park, 1966).

Type locality: 48°40'N 123°30'E (Park, 1966).

Material examined:

In the collections of the Zoological Institute, St. Petersburg species is absent.
