Comantenna recurvata

Short Description:

Comantenna recurvata is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (3.50-4.00 mm in length) from western Atlantic of near-bottom localities.

Taxonomic Description:

Female. (Description after Grice and Hulsemann (1970) and Alvarez (1986) with modifications). Total length 3.50-4.00 mm. Cephalothorax about 3.7 times longer than abdomen. Th4 and Th5 separated. A1 23-segmented, reaching Th3. Re A2 is three fourth of Ri A2 length; Re1, Re2 and Re3 A2 separated (Grice and Hulsemann, 1970) (according Alvarez (1986) figure fused), Re A2 - 7-segmented, 2 terminal setae long, 1 short. Ri2 Md with 5 setae, in other features Md typical of the genus. Mx1 setation: gnathobase 14 (9+1 terminal and 4 posterior setae) spines and setae, 4, or 3 setae on second and 3 on third internal lobe respectively, 4 setae on protopodite near Ri base, 11 on Ri, 11 on Re. Mxp protopodite with groups of 2, 3 and 3 setae (from proximal to distal), Ri1 Mxp with 2-3 medial setae. P1-P4 segmentation typical of the genus. Ri P1 external lobe reduced, terminal setae on basipodite near Ri base absent. In some specimens vestigial P5 present (Grice and Hulsemann, 1970).

Male unknown.

Vertical distribution:

The species was collected at depths 1750-1822 m in layer 30 cm over bottom surface, at the T° 3°C (Grice and Hulsemann, 1970), and also near bottom at depth 1100 m (Alvarez, 1986)

Geographical distribution:

Atlantic Ocean: to the South of Woods Hole, Massachusetts (Grice and Hulsemann, 1970), off Brazilian coast in the region of 25°S (Alvarez, 1986).

Type locality: 39°45'N 70°34'W (Grice and Hulsemann, 1970).

Material examined:

Species absent in the collections of the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg.
