Short Description:

Euchirella pseudopulchra is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (3.55-4.35 in length) from the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, mainly found in epipelagic.

Taxonomic Description:

Female. Total length 3.55-4.35 mm. Cephalothorax 4 times longer than abdomen. Anterior part of cephalon (laterally) of rectangular shape with crest. Rostrum small. Posterior Th5 corners rounded (lateral view), close to rectangular shape (dorsal view). When looking dorsally, genital segment asymmetrical, with wide round swelling in anterior part of left side and depressed in the middle of its length on the right. Posterior surface of genital segment depressed (left lateral view), with low chitinous crease anteriorly on the right side. Genital swelling well pronounced, removed to anterior part of segment. A1 reaching the end of Abd2. A2 with long Re and small Ri that is less than half length of Re1 A2. Coxopodite, basipodite and Ri1 A2 with 1 seta each, Ri2 A2 with 6 setae at each lobe. Md palp base and Ri1 Md without setae, Mx1 with 2(?) setae on posterior surface of gnathobase, 4 on the second internal and 2 on the third internal Mx1 lobes; on protopodite near the Ri base 3 setae; Ri with 4, Re with 11 and external lobe with 6 setae. Mx2 and Mxp typical of the genus. Re1 P1 with 2 external spines of equal length. P4 with 2-3 spines.

Male unknown.

Vertical distribution:

Recorded in haul from epipelagic (Park, 1976a), in total hauls between 500 and 2000 m.

Geographical distribution:

Found in the north-western, northern and south-eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean (Park, 1976a; Von Vaupel Klein, 1984; Markhaseva, 1996).

Type locality: the north-eastern part of the Pacific Ocean, Washington Sound (Park, 1976a).
