Pseudochirella bowmani

Short Description:

Pseudochirella bowmani is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (6.15 mm in length) from the south-eastern part of the Pacific Ocean.

Taxonomic Description:

Female. Total length 6.15 mm. Cephalothorax about 4 times longer than abdomen. Posterior Th5 corners prolonged into slightly asymmetrical lobes, rounded at the tops. Abd1-3 supplied with bushes of hairs. Genital segment asymmetrical, it is widest in about second third of its length and nearly as long as 2 following segments together; its length and largest width nearly equal. There are projections of different configuration on the right and on the left side of genital segment. Ventral swelling well developed, of tube-like shape. A1 broken. Ri1 A2 with 2 setae, Re1 A2 without setae, Re2 A2 with distal seta only. Md palp base with 3 setae, Ri1 Md with 9 terminal and 2 posterior setae. Mx1, Mx2 and Mxp typical of the genus. Re P1 3-segmented. Ri P2 2-segmented. P4 coxopodite with 11 fan-shaped spines.

Male unknown.

Remarks. The species is similar to P. scopularis and P. accepta , but differs in smooth rounded lobes of Th5 posterior corners, also configuration of genital segment and number of spines on P4 coxopodite (11 in present species and in P. scopularis 9, in P. accepta 13 spines). Ri P2 is distinguished from that in P. scopularis by distinctly 2-segmented structure.

Vertical distribution:

The species was found in haul from 3090 m.

Geographical distribution:

The species is known of the type locality only (Markhaseva, 1986a).

Type locality: The south-eastern part of the Pacific Ocean: 22°50'S 97°30'W.

Material examined:

1 female from 1 sample N 264 of collections of the Smitsonian Institution (Museum of Natural History), in collections of the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg species is absent.
